This course introduces motion graphics as a creative and communicative tool within media and film production. Students will learn the fundamentals of motion design—storyboarding, animatics, sequencing, composition, typography, and animation principles—while gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard software. Emphasis is placed on how motion graphics enhance storytelling, clarify information, and support audience engagement across media contexts. Through a combination of design exercises and project-based learning, students will develop skills in integrating text, image, audio, and video into compelling time-based compositions.

This course will center on the contributions which women have made to the history of graphic design. We will examine design items and readings from various sources and learn about historical, cultural, social, and political contexts in order to better understand the challenges these designers faced as women. We will reconsider the traditional nature of design history education through the lenses of cultural critique. The course will involve lectures, readings, videos, participatory exercises and discussions, and hands-on making activities.

This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles of typography (the visual representation of language) to effectively convey information and ideas to specific audiences. Focus is on the communicative function and aesthetic nature of typographic problem-solving. Course content and lectures will cover typographic terminology, type anatomy, history of typography, as well as type classification, type measurement, and issues of legibility and readability. Once students are introduced to the fundamentals of typography, they will include imagery as appropriate. Students will also refine their skills using relevant software.
